From Public Health to Planetary Health: The Story Behind 365 with Nature

The Question That Changed Everything

I began my career in public health.

I studied data. I analyzed disparities. I worked on evidence-based interventions designed to improve health outcomes across communities.

The science was solid. The research was rigorous.

And yet — something was missing.

Despite advances in medicine and behavioral science, rates of stress, chronic illness, and mental health challenges continued to rise.

We were treating symptoms.

But we were overlooking something foundational:

Our relationship with the natural world.

That realization became the seed that would eventually grow into 365 with Nature — a nonprofit rooted in the belief that personal health and planetary health are inseparable.

When Public Health Meets Environmental Justice

Public health is not just about hospitals and clinics.

It is about the conditions that shape our lives:

  • The air we breathe

  • The water we drink

  • The food we eat

  • The neighborhoods we live in

  • The green spaces we can access

Research consistently shows that access to green space improves:

  • Cardiovascular health

  • Mental well-being

  • Stress regulation

  • Immune function

But access is not equal.

Communities impacted by systemic inequities often experience:

  • Fewer parks and trees

  • Higher pollution exposure

  • Food deserts

  • Limited safe outdoor spaces

Environmental justice is public health.

You cannot separate wellness from equity.

And you cannot talk about healing without addressing access.

The Power of One Hour

In response to this growing awareness, I began a simple practice:

Spend one intentional hour in nature every day.

No multitasking.No productivity goals.Just presence.

What began as a personal challenge quickly became transformative.

Stress levels shifted. Perspective expanded. Creativity returned.

And something deeper surfaced:

Connection.

Connection to land.Connection to community.Connection to purpose.

The 365 with Nature Challenge was born from that simple, daily commitment.

One hour. Every day. All year long.

Because transformation doesn’t require grand gestures.

It begins with consistency.

Why Nature-Based Wellness Is Evidence-Based

Some people hear “nature-based wellness” and imagine something soft or abstract.

But the science is clear.

Time in nature reduces cortisol.Forest exposure activates the parasympathetic nervous system.Gardening improves mental health.Outdoor education strengthens cognitive development.

The Japanese practice of forest bathing (Shinrin-yoku) has demonstrated measurable reductions in blood pressure and stress markers.

Nature is not an alternative to health.

It is foundational to it.

As a health scientist, I could no longer ignore the data.

As a human being, I could no longer ignore the feeling.

Bridging Science and Soul

365 with Nature was built at the intersection of science and soul.

Our programs integrate:

  • Evidence-based public health principles

  • Environmental justice frameworks

  • Food sovereignty practices

  • Nature-based wellness

  • Creative ecological engagement

We do not separate wellness from justice.

We do not separate creativity from ecology.

We do not separate data from lived experience.

Because true transformation requires integration.

ReRooted: Food Sovereignty as Healing

Food is one of the most tangible ways people experience environmental inequity.

Industrial agriculture contributes significantly to climate change while many communities lack access to fresh, affordable produce.

Through our ReRooted program, we focus on:

  • Teaching sustainable gardening practices

  • Supporting community food resilience

  • Honoring ancestral foodways

  • Promoting climate-conscious eating

Growing food restores agency.

It reconnects people to soil, culture, and nourishment.

Food sovereignty is not just agricultural reform.

It is community healing.

Totally Curious: Raising the Next Generation of Stewards

If we want a healthier planet, we must nurture environmentally conscious children.

Totally Curious Education centers:

  • Inquiry-based outdoor learning

  • Sensory-rich exploration

  • Environmental literacy

  • Emotional regulation through nature

Children are naturally curious.

When we protect that curiosity and connect it to ecosystems, stewardship becomes instinctive.

The future of environmental justice depends on how we nurture the present generation.

Forest Bathing and Wild Soundscapes: Rest as Resistance

Modern life accelerates.

Productivity dominates.

Rest feels indulgent.

But nature teaches a different rhythm.

Our Forest Bathing Retreats and Wild Soundscapes programs create space for:

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Deep listening

  • Mindful presence

  • Collective renewal

Rest in nature is not escape.

It is preparation.

When people feel grounded and connected, they engage with sustainability differently.

Calm minds build resilient movements.

The Lesson Nature Continues to Teach Me

If there is one lesson this journey has reinforced, it is this:

Transformation does not come from information alone.

It comes from relationship.

You cannot force a seed to grow. You cannot rush a season. You cannot demand resilience without nurturing roots.

Nature models patience.

It models adaptation.

It models collective ecosystems where every element plays a role.

Public health taught me to measure impact.

Nature taught me to feel it.

Reconnecting People and Planet — One Day at a Time

365 with Nature exists because the health of our communities and the health of our ecosystems are intertwined.

When we restore our relationship with the Earth, we restore something vital within ourselves.

We begin making choices rooted in care instead of fear.

We begin building systems rooted in equity instead of extraction.

We begin imagining futures rooted in belonging.

This work is not mine alone.

It belongs to every child planting a seed.Every elder sharing food wisdom.Every community reclaiming green space.Every person stepping outside for one intentional hour.
